Dear reader,

After learning in the Mandarin Ab Initio class for two terms in LPC, it becomes quite difficult to do maintenance on the 479 words we have learned so far. In this post, I am going to share some of the study materials I have developed for the IB Mandarin Ab Initio class in LPCUWC. I use different tools to practice listening, writing and speaking. The tools are as follows.

Zhong Wen - Writing

Zhong Wen 2.0 can be accessed at the link below:

http://paingthet.com/coding/zhongwen/

Zhong Wen is a web-based app I developed for the Chinese character writing practice. You can choose a topic and the app will prompt you with English meaning. By using a device with a touch-screen, you can write the Chinese character and check your answer. The app also supports the pronunciation of Chinese characters and pinyin.

NOTE: I recommend the web-based version over android or ios because it is easier for me to update the word list. If you have been a frequent user of ZhongWen, then there is a slight chance that your browser will cache the site and the word list will not be up to date. In this case, please try using the app in incognito mode or privacy mode.

Shuo - Listening/Speaking

Shuo can be accessed here : http://paingthet.com/coding/shuo/

Shuo is another web-based app for practicing listening and speaking. If you have a Chinese paragraph in your computer, you can copy and paste it into the app. The app will automatically split the sentences and allow you to listen to each one. Both male and female voices are available and the reading speed can be adjusted.

A video tutorial on how to use shuo is below.

Quizlet Decks

For those Quizlet lovers out there, I have built the Quizlet decks for all the topics we have learnt so far and compliled them under one class. The class can be joined with this link :

The tools are not perfect, but they are good enough. If you have found any mistakes to correct, or any bugs, please shoot me a message.

With warmest regards,

π
