The first term at LPC has successfully ended and it was full of wonderful memories. Thanks to the supportive friends, teachers and other support systems, I am very glad that I was able to have a well-balanced lifestyle with good results here. Now, it is time for a little reflection on how I have done throughout the term and I am going to write about how LPC has changed my life - to put it simply, it is about my life before and after coming to LPC.
I came from a humble background from Yangon and attended a Christian Missionary school there. I am very passionate about science, technology, and education. I have always wanted to become a computer scientist and I also liked to meet new people. Therefore, when I am not busy with my studies, I would attend technology conferences like BarCamp in Yangon and workshops, like the diversity workshop in Yangon YMCA, as in the photo.
Also, I am very interested in thinking about the applications of things I learned at school. I have always wanted to try out the things I learned theoretically so that I can have a deeper understanding. Unfortunately, the high-school education system I have grown up in Myanmar did not allow me to do so. Therefore, when I have finished the physics or chemistry classes at school, I would try out the things I learned in class, at my home.
After I have started my journey in LPCUWC, I have seen dramatic improvements in myself in every aspect. For example, the International Baccalaureate programme taught at LPCUWC allows students to learn deeply and explore the subjects by themselves. For instance, we have to carry out real experiments in Physics and Chemistry classes then write lab reports on our findings. This enriches my learning and I am enjoying the academic experience here. The teachers are also very inspiring and this motivates me to push my limits.
Moreover, the UWC experience is far more than academics. In LPC, we have extracurricular activities called Quan Cai activities, which means “Development of the whole person.” In Quan Cai, we can choose from a wide variety of activities and pursue our interests. For instance, I am doing Chinese Dragon Dance and learning the traditional Chinese Painting. These allow me to explore and learn about different cultures, interact with new friends and train me to work as a team.
Furthermore, we have also done our “China Week.” China Week is where the students travel to China to participate in community projects. For instance, I went to China and taught English at a local school. This experience widens my perspectives on the world and I learned a lot about the issues in another country other than Myanmar. Also, I have to work as a part of the team with my friends to plan English activities. This improved my presentation, teamwork and leadership skills furthermore. My China Week was an enriching experience and it allowed me to bond with my friends more. I also had a chance to work on education, which is the issue I am concerned about and I was able to make a small impact in a community.
Finally, LPCUWC has allowed me to experience a very diverse community. Since many students of different nationalities are mixed, we are always learning something new from each other every day. Whether it is a conversation about global issues with Mongolian and Norwegian friends at the canteen table, or performing together with a Japanese friend at Music Night, I am always exposed to new ideas from all over the world and continually exchanging cultures. Living with a diverse community is a part of my everyday life at LPCUWC and I am becoming a more well-rounded person due to this. Indeed, UWC is education like no other.
